Commercial Refrigerator Troubleshooting Guide
Common Failures, Causes & Solutions
Possible Causes:
- Dirty condenser coils
- Refrigerant leak
- Faulty thermostat or controller
- Compressor failure
- Blocked airflow (inside cabinet or behind unit)
What to Do:
- Clean condenser coils
- Verify temperature setpoints (Refrigerators 34°F – Freezers -8 °F)
- Check for blocked vents or overstocking
- If issue persists → Call a technician (possible refrigerant or compressor problem)
Possible Causes:
- Faulty probe/thermostat
- Heavy product load
- Doors left open or gasket damage
- Poor ventilation around the unit
What to Do:
- Ensure doors close tightly and gaskets are intact
- Spread products evenly, avoid blocking fans
- Clean condenser coils
- Check for ice buildup on evaporator
- If issue persists → Call a technician
Possible Causes:
- Frequent door openings
- Worn gaskets letting warm air in
- Poor circulation due to blocked shelves
What to Do:
- Limit door openings
- Replace damaged gaskets
- Keep vents clear inside cabinet
Possible Causes:
- Power supply issue
- Turn ON rocker switch
- Tripped breaker or blown fuse
- Faulty controller or start relay
- Compressor failure
What to Do:
- Check outlet and breaker panel
- Plug unit into different outlet.
- Make sure unit is connected to a dedicated outlet. (No extension cords)
- Call a technician if power source is good but unit still won’t start
Possible Causes:
- Failing condenser/evaporator fan
- Loose or vibrating components
- Compressor problem
What to Do:
- Identify noise location (back, inside, or underneath)
- Tighten loose panels or hardware
- Call a technician if fan or compressor noise persists
Possible Causes:
- Clogged drain line
- Cracked or missing drain pan
- Excess condensation due to bad gaskets
- Humid environment causing condensation
What to Do:
- Check for clogged drain line
- Inspect drain pan for damage
- Replace door gaskets if worn
Possible Causes:
- Failed defrost heater
- Faulty temperature probe
- Airflow restriction
- Doors left open too long
- Blocked vents or overstocking
What to Do:
- Defrost manually to clear ice, empty refrigerator, disconnect equipment and let it defrost with doors open for 24 hours.
- Check gaskets and airflow
- Check if evaporator fan is working (pressing doors switch only on reach inns)
- Call a technician if ice returns quickly
Preventive Maintenance Tips
- Clean condenser coils every 3 months (monthly in greasy/dusty kitchens)
- Inspect and replace gaskets regularly
- Keep unit at least 4–6 inches from walls for proper airflow
- Avoid blocking evaporator fans inside the cabinet
- Schedule preventive maintenance twice a year
When to Call a Technician Immediately:
- Compressor not running
- Unit trips breakers repeatedly
- Frequent temperature alarms or error codes PR1 and PR2
- Rapid ice build-up after defrosting
- Refrigerant or oil leaks
